If you said to me 12 months ago that Halston and River would have a little over 50 amazing subscription box businesses as part of our family I would have said “Oh to dream!”. But as I sit here today, that is exactly what we have. I can’t believe how much this business has grown in the last 12 months. A growth which has extended to me in so many ways.
The learning curve that a new business puts you on is steep, emotional and a lot of hard work. But in the same breath, it is utterly rewarding and fulfilling.
I started Halston & River to feel challenged and inspired. To have something just for me. Something to make me feel alive again! Since becoming a Mum, I felt like I was becoming just that… a Mum. I love being a Mum to my twins more than anything, but I felt `I still need an outlet. A place or purpose that keeps the fire and drive alive.
For me, I wanted an outlet that meant I could still be there for my twins. As a high flying (literally!) international flight attendant I was used to being busy and on the go. It was a great lifestyle, but certainly not one I would recommend with a young family. My change in direction to business owner means I am there for my kids whilst still having something for me. My life on my terms.
The journey so far has had its ups and downs and international moves hasn’t helped. Who knew moving an online business overseas would have so many hurdles. But alas, my persistence (or stubbornness as some may call it!) has paid off.
The community support you can find online in places like Facebook groups is amazing. For anyone starting their online journey, I highly recommend becoming active in these groups. I have found new friends and built an amazing support network of like-minded women. This is the support you don’t get from family and friends. Whilst they are truly supportive of my journey, it takes a like minded business woman to pull you through the tough days. Someone who is on the same path as you.
The hardest thing I have found since opening Halston & River is the balance between work and kids. One plus side that a 9-5 job has for it, you have a start and end time. Working an online business from home, the boundaries are somewhat blurred. I’ve lost count the number of late nights I have had working on my business. Burning the midnight oil posting, scheduling, networking and some days just staring at my Facebook wondering what to do next.
Would I change it? Absolutely not. I have found a passion for providing a service to the subscription box world. Subscription boxes make the best gifts or just a practical way to keep on top of your nice to haves. Have you seen the chocolate subscription box? Who wouldn’t want a box of chocolate delivered each month! Or a good book to keep the library stack fresh? How about keeping your tea supplies fresh and flavoursome with a new blend each month? I never knew I could do this and help so many people like I have. But it’s the business itself that has helped me the most. I feel alive again and a new found focus that enables me to keep my passion alive. I have found I am a better Mum because of it too.
So why Halston & River? Well, it’s all because of my gorgeous twins. They are my reason for starting this journey and I wanted to reflect them in the business so they are always with me, driving me to succeed.
